This DEM was created from 1:50,000 scale Soviet topographic maps, the most detailed map series ever created for the country. The DEM accurately and precisely depicts Afghanistan’s rugged, mountainous terrain.

All relevant GIS vector layers were extracted from the maps and used as inputs to the DEM creation process, yielding a DEM which is unrivaled in quality. See below for a list of available layers.
